LAUNCH!

The LAUNCH! G.E.D. Program has been in operation at the Mystic Learning Center since September 2005. It serves youth from the Metro North region of Boston.

The program focuses both on helping students to achieve a passing score on the General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate and on providing the skills and knowledge young people need to get and keep good jobs.

LAUNCH! works in partnership with Employment Resources, Inc. (ERI), the Somerville Housing Authority (SHA), The Career Place (TCP), and the Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experience (SCALE).

Students study Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Science, Social Studies as well as attending workshops and individual counseling sessions to develop workplace skills. During the course of the program, and for a full year afterwards, students explore different post-G.E.D. educational opportunities including college, trade schools, and career-oriented employment with the assistance of the LAUNCH! staff and our partners at The Career Place.

The program services twenty students per year on an open enrollment basis. For more information about the program, please email launchged@verizon.net, or call Maureen Devlin at 617-460-7907.

Through the acts of writing, publishing, performing, and selling, the Books of Hope program boosts the self-esteem and empowerment of a diverse group of Somerville youth. Books of Hope brings together a community of youth representing the rich racial, cultural and linguistic diversity of Somerville itself in order to help each participant to improve his or her self-expression skills. Using local and global artists, professionals and community activists as examples and mentors, we aid and inspire youth to manipulate language in order to present their ideas and their stories to the public.
